The Concert Film

The Concert is a narrative vignette, the pilot film in the American Girlhood Project.

It was completed in late summer of 2023, and is actively screening at festivals throughout North America.

Logline:

Three teens riff on music, future, and freedom as they prep for their first rock concert. The girls tap into sisterhood, strength, and resolve when their dream night takes a brutally realistic turn.

Synopsis:

Farrah and Lisa kick back in Angie's basement, waiting on her dad for a ride to their first major rock show. Time ticks away in their cozy den. They shoot the breeze about boys, down some soda, and fine-tune their fledgling metal band - The Feminist Electric Mares. While they jam, a riot girl sound starts to emerge. Out of nowhere, an argument upstairs throws them off track. They face this hurdle, stick together and step into a hazy future. Pulling no punches, with a killer indie score as its backdrop, this is a true-to-life coming-of-age tale told from their point of view.

What's the vision for the American Girlhood Film Cycle?

Prompted by recent cultural shifts in the US, the film cycle seeks to shine a light on multi-generational female experiences, from everyday grooming rituals to confronting glass ceilings; moments that make us, break us, or teach us to comply. The film cycle is constructed of stand-alone vignettes. The scenes are devoid of outright violence, neat lessons, or contrived story arcs, focusing instead on real time tension and pace. The end goal is to draw the viewer into the time and space of the girls. Through evocative cinematography and sensory environments, each episode provides a glimpse into formative moments, from their POV. The time periods are purposefully ambiguous landing broadly in the late 20th and early 21 century, with nostalgic soundscapes that allow a multigenerational audience to see themselves in the girls.

Each short delves into a coming-of-age narrative, exploring power dynamics and identity formation. The film fragments offer poignant snapshots of girl's experience, including a toddler's defiance amidst familial discord, a child navigating unpredictable adult behavior, a grade schooler confronting societal expectations at a dinner party, a tween grappling with unwanted attention, and two teens challenging authority. Each storyline provides a compelling exploration of resilience and self-discovery.
